AR Gaming Startup Krikey Receives Funding from Reliance Jio; Launches New Game 'Yaatra'

Team StartupcitySan Francisco based Augmented Reality gaming startup Krikey has raised an undisclosed amount of funding from Reliance Jio. With the commencement of Series A round of funding, the gaming startup has so far raised a total of $22 million.

As part of the deal Krikey has also launched an action packed Augmented Reality game ‘Yaatra’ in the Indian market. Players can use their mobile phone cameras to step into the action-adventure story of Yaatra.

Speaking about the launch of ‘Yaatra’ Akash Ambani, Director, Reliance Jio, said, “Krikey will inspire a generation
of Indians to embrace Augmented Reality. Our vision is to bring the best experiences from across the world to India and the introduction of Yaatra is a step in that direction. AR gaming takes the user into a world of its own, and we invite every Jio and non-Jio user to experience AR through Yaatra.” The game will be available on Android and iOS platforms alike.

‘Yaatra’ comes from the house of Krikey that had earlier partnered with The Ellen DeGeneres Wildlife Foundation & Sony Pictures Entertainment for GOOSEBUMPS, building custom multi-player AR games for each brand partner. The gaming startup had launched its first location-based AR game, WINGSPAN built with Google Maps and sponsored by the National Audubon Society in 2019.

Founded in 2017, Krikey was founded by sister duo, Jhanvi Shriram and Ketaki Shriram. Jhanvi holds a BA, MBA from Stanford and an MFA from USC, and Ketaki holds a BA, MA, and PhD from Stanford (in virtual reality and game development).The two have prior experience of working with YouTube, Facebook's Oculus and Google [x]. "Our vision with Krikey is to bring together inspiration and reality in an immersive way. With augmented reality, we are able to bring fantasy worlds into your home, straight through the window of your mobile phone,” said Jhanvi and Ketaki.
