It was 2005 when San Francisco witnessed the emergence of freelancers looking for working spaces. In return people opened up their homes to them and the first ever “coworking spaces” came into existence. The same year saw the opening of “Hub” in London and St. Oberholz in Berlin which offered workspaces to freelancers. It was the same year when “coworking” along with a concept was put forward by Brad Neuberg.
Standing at the onset of 2019, we see that the concept has grown into an industry. It has taken the form of a social movement by bringing about major changes in the work practices.
As it stands, NASSCOM has predicted the rise of over 11,500 tech-startups by 2020

which will be in need of working spaces to carry their operations.Coworking spaces that are being developed everyday are gaining attention of these companies not only because it solves the problem of high infrastructure for office spaces but also enables the employees of the companies to work, learn and collaborate in an ecosystem they are also a part of. Ramesh Nair, CEO, JLL India said that the demand for coworking spaces is no longer restricted to freelancers or start-up employees.The managements of various small businesses as well as of large corporate companies are looking forward to shift a part of their business to coworking spaces in order to increase their productivity. Infact, this gradual growth in the number of coworking spaces directly implies to the reducing cost of infrastructure and convenience in travel which are some of the top priorities for any business.
Perhaps, the ongoing cultures of the coworking spaces act as the key differentiator in the evolution of this industry. A coworking space is always an ensemble caste. It consists of companies from different domains who share a common office space and develop a sense of “co-workers” among them. It brings forward the combination of different office cultures in order to create a sense a unity and “oneness” in culture. As the gig workforce continues to increase, the clause of innovation becomes indispensible and organisations are looking forward to cater to varied workforces. So, by developing a flexible work culture coupled with growth mindset can be instrumental in the development of the country and coworking spaces have a major role to play in it.
