The Technological Evolution

Team StartupcityThe history of AI can be traced back to 1950 , when Alan Turing published “Computing Machinery and Intelligence”- which proposed the idea of The Imitation Game – a question that considered if machines can think. This proposal later became The Turing Test, which measured machine (artificial) intelligence. Turing’s development tested a machine’s ability to think as a human would. The Turing Test became an important component in the philosophy of artificial intelligence, which discusses intelligence, consciousness, and ability in machines.

The ideal characteristic of artificial intelligence is its ability to rationalize and take actions that have the best chance of achieving a specific goal. When most people hear the term artificial intelligence, the first thing they usually think of is robots. That's because big-budget films and novels weave stories about human-like machines that wreak havoc on Earth. But nothing could be further from the truth. Artificial intelligence is based on the principle that human intelligence can be defined in a way that a machine can easily mimic it and execute tasks, from the most simple to those that are even more complex. The goals of artificial intelligence include learning, reasoning, and perception.

As technology advances, previous benchmarks that defined artificial intelligence become outdated. For example, machines that calculate basic functions or recognize text through optical character recognition are no longer considered artificial intelligence, since this function is now taken for granted as an inherent computer function.
AI is continuously evolving to benefit many different industries. Machines are wired using a
cross-disciplinary approach based on mathematics, computer science, linguistics, psychology, and more.

Algorithms often play a very important part in the structure of artificial intelligence, where simple algorithms are used in simple applications, while more complex ones help frame strong artificial intelligence. Algorithms have in fact become the life line of this world without which the world will cease to function the way it does today. Everything from your Cab rides to all the food delivery apps people use are run and governed by AI Applications.

The applications for artificial intelligence are endless. The technology can be applied to many different sectors and industries. AI is being tested and used in the healthcare industry for dosing drugs and different treatment in patients, and for surgical procedures in the operating room.
Other examples of machines with artificial intelligence include computers that play chess and self-driving cars. Each of these machines must weigh the consequences of any action they take, as each action will impact the end result. In chess, the end result is winning the game. For self-driving cars, the computer system must account for all external data and compute it to act in a way that prevents a collision.

Since, the world is increasingly becoming dependent on AI intelligence , prominent Philosopher , Historian and Author Yuval Noah Harari fears that soon in a matter of a couple of decades AI intelligence has the potential to take over more than 70% of the total jobs. All this has been brilliantly illustrated in his bestselling book " Homo Deus" . If one considers carefully for a second then the realization shall strike that it is indeed the direction in which the world is moving towards. Machines do not have feelings , and it is always an one time investment with a few repairs in between . This advantage alone is enough for the companies to hire machines with AI Intelligence for their task , instead of hiring a human being who in turn would have to be paid salary for their work. Machines don't tire but humans do.

We are at a cross-roads, in a couple of decades there will be a huge mass of ‘useless class' without any work with degrees which are outdated and not in-tuned with the current job market scenario. In a couple of decades or so, people will have plenty of free time up their sleeve. Free time like never experienced in history before. People will become more creative and arts will be on the rise. This positive future will however only occur if the leaders of the world realize beforehand and react accordingly in establishing a system which is adaptable to the changes mentioned. A new economic system based on Basic Universal Allowance shall be needed.
