Gaurav Sabharwal & Prashant Pathak,Co-foundersWonder House Books is the brainchild of two doting parents—Gaurav Sabharwal and Prashant Pathak, who decided to bridge the gap prevailing in the children’s book publishing space with affordable and good quality books. Their entrepreneurial expedition began in the year 2016when they attended the Frankfurt Book Fair, where the outstanding quality and content of the books exhibited led them to want to fill the deficit in the Indian children’s book market. After mulling over the differences and rooting out the cause behind this polarity, both decided to collaborate, and that’s how Wonder House Books was born.
An imprint of India’s leading book distribution company, Prakash Books, this linkage has helped Wonder House Books in planning and incorporating strategies for the company with considerable ease. "Being on the Indian publishing scene for nearly 25 years now, I was really perturbed by the fact that the content available for children in the Indian market was not up to the mark", says Gaurav Sabharwal, Managing Director, Wonder House Books. "We both are young parents, so we understand the value of quality books for children. That is where Wonder House Books takes a special initiative to address the concerns of young parents like ourselves, especially those with children in the 0–8 age group," narrates Prashant Pathak,Publisher, Wonder House Books.

The Game Changers

Wonder House Books has committed itself to transform the world of children’s books with the sole objective to imbue the habit of reading in children. Keeping this objective in mind, the company has been fashioning a variety of coloring and picture books for kids. Parallel to which, it has also put forward an extensive range of puzzles and activity boxes to keep children thrilled, engaged, and thoroughly entertained. Writing Fun, My First Sticker Books, Super Activity Pads, 101 Activity Books, Pencil Control and Namaha—Illustrated Stories from the Lands of Gods and Goddesses, are some of its top-selling books.
“There are several ways to make a book interactive—more innovation with content and design helps. We are coming up with a new set of designs to attract, engage and make children invested in reading. You will be amazed to know that we introduced the Indian children’s publishing scene to the Pencil Control Book—unique in its concept as well as treatment. In the last 1.5 years, we have sold over 80,000 copies of it, and this is just India we’re talking about. Another product that did wonders was the Little Library. Every child and parent has loved their exclusive little library. So, the Little Library, as a product, has been on top offline and online since its very first print. It sold over 1,25,000 boxes. These innovative products are giving us an edge over the digital market. So, we are not shying away from the digital market; we just don’t think it needs that kind of attention currently,” adds Prashant.

The vision of the publishers is executed by a bright and enthusiastic team of editors, designers, content writers and illustrators who exercise caution and make a diligent effort to bring to life books with an innate feel-good factor for children. Prashant adds, "One of our aims is to introduce children to leisure reading, and so we have a comprehensive list of subject matter experts on board to vet our content." "We make a huge investment in hiring the best personnel in the industry to ensure that our products are responsibly created and are suitable for the children’s market," elucidates Gaurav.
In a short span of about 18 months, the company has successfully built itself as a business worth 15 crores. Headquartered in Delhi, it has also launched offices in Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Mumbai. "We are closely collaborating with distributors across the globe, especially in the U.S., to sell Wonder House Books there as well. Our greatest milestone has been achieving customer satisfaction and having an organic growth," informs Prashant.

What Lies Ahead!

The company has initiated its journey towards a new direction where it aspires to take over the international market. Wonder House Books is set to release 750 titles by the end of December 2020. Some of its upcoming titles include Abridged Classics, Greatest Shakespeare Stories, Encyclopedias, Baby Record Books, Indian Mythology, Stress Busting Activity Books, etc. "We don't believe in restricting our vision to books alone. A child’s mind is so ceaselessly imaginative, so boundless and free, it is unfair to box it up and tell a child— this is the only way you should learn about the world around you'! Therefore, Wonder House Books is also bringing out an expansive and well-researched range of puzzles and activity boxes to keep the child engaged, stimulated and entertained," apprises Gaurav.
