• $12M raised to scale carbon removal and Earth science R&D.
• Uses basalt dust to boost crops and remove CO₂ naturally.
• Darjeeling Revival Project links climate tech with cultural restoration.

Alt Carbon has successfully secured $12 million in seed funding to expand its climate-tech initiatives in agriculture. This deeptech science and data startup attracted investment from Lachy Groom, along with support from its existing investors.

The funding will help ramp up Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) efforts in the Global South, boost research and development in Earth Sciences, innovate hardware solutions, and enhance operations in India to promote long-term climate resilience.

Alt Carbon is at the forefront of a groundbreaking carbon capture technique known as Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW). This innovative process involves applying basalt rock dust a byproduct of mining onto agricultural lands. Not only does this practice improve soil health and increase crop yields, but it also facilitates natural carbon sequestration. When rainwater interacts with the basalt, it generates bicarbonate ions that eventually transform into stable calcium carbonate in the oceans, effectively locking away carbon for over 10,000 years.

Their flagship initiative, The Darjeeling Revival Project (DRP), beautifully combines climate innovation with local benefits. It aims to sequester CO₂ while revitalizing degraded soils, restoring livelihoods, and rejuvenating the iconic tea ecosystem of Darjeeling.
