Gaming startup Backlight Games Secures Funding led by Udyat Ventures
Backlight Studio Works, the company behind gaming startup Backlight Games, has secured an undisclosed sum of investment in a funding round led by Udyat Ventures. Additional participants in the round included Manish Agrawal, the former CEO of Nazara Technologies, and Polygon Ventures and Dexter Ventures. The funding will be utilized for purposes such as recruiting, market expansion, and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to provide personalized experiences for players, thereby enhancing the overall user experience.
Established in 2011 by Shruti Sarraf and Anurpam Srivasta, the company specializes in creating casual mobile games. Its flagship product, Ludo SuperStar, has amassed over 200 million downloads. Additionally, Backlight has introduced other games, including CallBreak and Carron SuperStar, which the company claims have achieved a spot among the top 100 games on the Play Store in India. Regarding the funding, cofounder Srivastava emphasized their commitment to crafting an unparalleled gaming experience through the application of AI and ML. Sarraf further stated that the startup's primary goal has always been to develop classic games for a global audience, recognizing the growth potential in the global market, where virtually every smartphone user has the potential to become a gamer.
The startup faces competition from gaming studios such as Funstop Games, QuriousBit, HighXP, and others. Funstop Games, for instance, recently raised $1.5 million in a funding round led by InfoEdge Ventures. They intend to utilize these funds to expand their game development team and enhance their ad-tech capabilities to strengthen their games portfolio. Furthermore, the startup announced its expansion plans, focusing on markets like India, Turkey, Vietnam, and the UK in the next two years. Similarly, QuriousBit secured $2 million in a seed funding round led by Lumikai, with the goal of establishing a new standard in innovative puzzle games developed in India for a global audience. The funds will also support their team expansion efforts.
